Pterygium
Pterygium is a condition treated at Desai Eye Hospital where a non-cancerous growth of tissue develops on the surface of the eye, usually starting from the corner of the eye near the nose and extending onto the cornea. This growth, often referred to as “surfer’s eye,” is typically caused by prolonged exposure to sunlight, dust, wind, or other environmental irritants. Pterygium can lead to symptoms such as redness, irritation, dryness, and blurred vision, especially if the growth interferes with the cornea.
In cases where the pterygium is causing significant discomfort or vision problems, surgical intervention may be necessary. The procedure involves removing the growth and, in some cases, covering the affected area with a small piece of the patient’s conjunctiva (the clear membrane covering the white part of the eye) to prevent recurrence. At Desai Eye Hospital, our experienced ophthalmologists provide comprehensive care, from diagnosis to post-surgical follow-up, ensuring the best possible outcomes for patients. Treatment aims to restore comfort, protect vision, and prevent the pterygium from returning.
How Does It Work?
- Pterygium is a benign growth of tissue on the eye’s conjunctiva.
- It often extends onto the cornea, causing irritation or blurred vision.
- UV exposure, dust, and dry conditions are common causes of pterygium.
- Early symptoms include redness, dryness, and a gritty feeling in the eye.
- Mild cases are treated with lubricating drops or anti-inflammatory medication.
- Advanced cases may require surgical removal to restore clear vision.
- After surgery, protective measures like sunglasses help prevent recurrence.
- Regular eye check-ups are essential for monitoring and managing pterygium.
